Edmonton Women Falling Victim to Online Dating Scams

A few theories are being tossed around as to why an increasing number of women in Canada, namely Edmonton, have fallen victim to online dating scams. Maybe women in Canada are gullible or maybe scammers are intentionally targeting certain parts of Canada in order to run their scams. However, one thing is certain, in only a matter of months, online dating scammers have managed to scam Edmonton women out of nearly $300,000 combined.

Scammers usually get away with these sorts of online scams due to the embarrassment of their victims. This is surely the case in the recent Edmonton incidents, as the only woman who came forward about the scam did so with total anonymity. The Edmonton woman was scammed out of cash by a younger man who she met in an online dating website.

The Edmonton woman explained how after speaking with the young man over the phone several times a day for a period of 3 months, he began to ask her for financial assistance. First, his son was sick and needed money for medication. Later, a family member passed away and he couldn’t afford the funeral costs. After she sent the man an undisclosed amount of money, the man was mysteriously gone.

“These people are really good at what they do.” Said an Edmonton police officer. He went on to say that they suspect all of the incidents in the Edmonton area are connected to the same group of scammers. However, this is little consolation to the anonymous woman who was left heart-broken and penny less by the scammer. “How could you do this to me?” She asked, crying. “How could you take my money, my self-esteem – they take your life.”

eHarmony Launches Gay Online Dating Site

in Online Dating | No Comments

After going through a discrimination court case last fall, in which the New Jersey attorney general ordered eHarmony to create a counterpart gay online dating site, Compatible Partners (eHarmony’s gay online dating site) has been launched in order to make due on the equal rights promise.

eHarmony designed the gay online dating site after its parent site by maintaining many of the same standards that eHarmony is know for, such as the all-encompassing, relationship-preferences questionnaire; however, it is questionable whether eHarmony’s gay online dating site, Compatible Partners, will have the same level of success as its parent site, much due to the fact that eHarmony notes clearly in the disclaimer that “The company has not conducted similar research on same-sex relationships.”

Many people are skeptical of the effectiveness of the pairing process eHarmony’s gay online dating site will have, like Patrick Perrine, CEO of the gay online dating site myPartner.com, who noted that the technology and means used for matching gay men on his site would never work in a hetero-site.

Others are skeptical of the effort that will be put forth by eHarmony towards their gay online dating site, noting that one of eHarmony’s founders and present chairman, Neil Clark Warren, is a devout evangelical Christian who may not support the idea of a gay online dating site.

In eHarmony defense, when they where asked about the religious issue, CEO Greg Waldorf said, “Our mission is to help our users find great long-term relationships,” adding, “We started in the opposite-sex market, which is where all of our experience was. That doesn’t mean we were against something.”
